Controlling the HOLD button of the KP2 through MIDI is unfortunately not possible. But as I’m using an Arduino to generate the MIDI messages, why not to use it for controlling the HOLD button.
That’s when the photocoupler PS2501 comes in handy. Two pins (3 and 4, the transistor) goes to the two pins of the HOLD button of the KP2 (order matters, just try) and the two others (1 and 2, the LED) to the Arduino (one to the ground and one to a digital pin that will be the control pin).
The HOLD is switched on or off on a rising edge. Changing the program always switches HOLD off. So each time a MIDI message changes the program, one must put the control digital pin to HIGH, wait a bit, and finally put the digital pin to LOW (to switch HOLD on). This is to ensure that the next time we put the digital pin to HIGH it will result in a rising edge.
The advantage of using a photocoupler is that there are only two connections needed to the KP2 (no ground connection needed) and it is easier and smaller than a relay.
The NJL7502 a pretty nice and cheap phototransistor (2 for 100yens) that I’m using for my modular light-sensitive projection screen that is the instrument used in the project Kousenjuu with Y. Fuyama.
As a transistor, it can be used in switch or active mode. Used in active mode with a resistance of about 47K, it will give you the full range between 0 and Vs.
The advantage over a photoresistance is that it is actually cheaper and the wavelength response is very close to the one of the human eye. Moreover, it can be used as a switch too.

Great news ! The Ningen Dogs Orchestra has been accepted for NIME++2010 that will take place in Sydney in mid-June !
We would like to play some additional shows in Sydney or around, so if you know a place, let us know ! I would like to perform as Nunk on Droise too if possible.
Only three days before leaving for Hong-Kong. Everything is working quite well, just trying to make things as easy as possible to setup once there, especially for the MILK+ performance. I’ve decided to use four sensors, two flex sensors and two pressure sensors, to measure sexual arousal. I’ll have some visualizations on an oscilloscope that will be controlled by a processing sketch that will at the same time send some OSC messages to a pure data patch. I’ve been playing with the superformula for the visualization and it’s quite fun.
