Great news ! The Ningen Dogs Orchestra has been accepted for NIME++2010 that will take place in Sydney in mid-June !
We would like to play some additional shows in Sydney or around, so if you know a place, let us know ! I would like to perform as Nunk on Droise too if possible.
Only three days before leaving for Hong-Kong. Everything is working quite well, just trying to make things as easy as possible to setup once there, especially for the MILK+ performance. I’ve decided to use four sensors, two flex sensors and two pressure sensors, to measure sexual arousal. I’ll have some visualizations on an oscilloscope that will be controlled by a processing sketch that will at the same time send some OSC messages to a pure data patch. I’ve been playing with the superformula for the visualization and it’s quite fun.

This is what I’m trying to do for my participation to the performance MILK+ on 27th March. To make the problem simpler, I’m considering only the problem of measuring sexual arousal of male subjects.
The way to measure sexual arousal is usually (even if it is not very common) by using a device called a PPG (penile plethysmograph) that itself can be of two types: volumetric air chamber and circumferential transducer. A PPG device is pretty hard to find and expensive and is anyway not necessary to actually measure sexual arousal as the sensor itself is sufficient.
A volumetric air chamber is certainly not the easiest solution. So that leaves me with the circumferential transducer. I guess I could find one or something very similar such as a flexible stretch sensor. Nonetheless I think that a sensor that measures the circumference is not very convenient to place and measurements might not be very precise.
I thought to several alternatives to these two sensors. I give here a short, incomplete list: range finder, tilt sensor (accelerometer), potentiometer (with a mechanical device attached to it), bend sensor, position sensor.
Given the constraints, my choice is on the bend sensor or flex sensor as measurement and placement are relatively straightforward.
Still, it is quite unsatisfactory as this method of measuring sexual arousal is limited to male subjects and relies on a single physiological change (even if an erection is arguably the best indicator of sexual arousal). The problem is that the other physiological changes are pretty hard to measure except may be the pupillary dilation that can be caused by various stimuli but should work on both female and male subjects.
However, another advantage of measuring the erection as a measure of sexual arousal is that with almost any sensor used to measure it, a continuous reading of the sexual arousal is obtained. This is particularly convenient when the purpose is not just a binary detection of the state of the sexual arousal (aroused or not) but to produce visual and auditory feedback (which is my purpose). Anyway, more soon with experimental results !

Information about the Techno(sexual)Bodies exhibition/performance are now available on the site the gallery Videotage.
I will be present for the performance on 27th March and do some (sex)noise in addition to the music by Sin:Ned. Unfortunately, I won’t be in HK for the opening of the exhibition or the exhibition itself. That’s a shame given the wonderful artists whose works will be shown !

300 wild pictures, an exhibition of both silkscreened and offset printed gig posters made in Lyon (France) in the past five years by the local DIY scene who has been subjected to judicial proceedings since the interdiction of fly posting in the city. These drawings were designed by 30 different local artists and are all compiled in a book which was published by Barbe à Pop in 2009.
And Kakawaka had the good idea to send me the book ! Thank you so much. Of course, this it not totally disinterested as there is a poster of the gig we did with droise back in 2007 ! Drawing by Damien Grange.

So, I’ve been invited to show some of my works (A series of controversial dildonics) in HK in April for a group exhibition (Techno(sexual)-bodies) curated by Isaac Leung and Johannes Grenzfurthner (Monochrom) at the gallery Videotage. That’s a great news especially that the head artist is Shu Lea Cheang who you might know as the director of the movie I.K.U.
That is a good opportunity to reconsider/rework my work and improve it. I’ve kept two of the three initial dildonics (the seismic and the sex strike dildos) and added a third one that is not strictly speaking a dildonics, Porn Hero. The sex strike dildo is basically the same than before, the only difference being that I removed the computer from the loop (this is true for the seismic dildo too). Now the microcontroller is directly connected to Internet and collects data through a PHP script that are processed and used to control the dildonics. There is a simple interface with an LCD screen in order to control the sex strike dildo. And finally, I’ve added a terrestrial globe to the seismic dildo. A LED inside the globe is controlled by two servo motors and indicates the latitude and longitude of an earthquake as it happens.
That was a very good opportunity to learn more about arduino as I used for the first time an xport module, an LCD screen and servo motors. Anyway, more about that soon here and on flickr.
The second great news is that I’ll be particpating to a performance (MILK+) directed by Shu Lea Cheang on 27th March at videotage in HK:
“In conjunction with Techno(sexual)-bodies exhibition at Videotage, MILK+ brings together artists Shu Lea Cheang (famed for her I.K.U. Japanese scifi porn), Katrien Jacobs (famed for libidot.org) and Isaac Leung (famed for Oriental Whore) to transform Videotage into a sci-fi dystopia landscape with scenes of seduction, decadence, corruption and above all sexual arousal and cautious reawakening of AIDS epidemic.”
I don’t know yet what I’ll do exactly but certainly some noise ! If possible, I will plug some sensors (still thinking about that but you certainly have an idea of the kind of sensors that would be appropriate for such a performance) to an arduino/processing and fire some OSC messages to Pure Data. May be that’s the time for “Sound of Life” to be shown as a live performance ?
